Power BI Weekly
Issue #151 - 5th April 2022
Some really exciting announcements this week. For those that follow Marco Russo on Twitter, you'll know that he spent a good part of the last week building us up for an announcement for some sort of new tool. Well, that moment came, and it came in the form of Bravo for Power BI, a free and open-source tool which rolls a few handy (previously disparate) features into a single interface (those features being Analyze Model (using the Vertipaq Analyzer tech), Format DAX, Manage Dates and Export Data). Well done and thank you to the SQLBI team for their community contribution - I'm sure lots of people will find it useful. The other announcement I'm particularly excited about (that's just been announced) is the Update to the required permissions when using composite models on a Power BI dataset. For those using the DQ for Power BI Datasets feature, no longer do consumers of such a dataset require Build permissions on all the datasets in the chain - they only need Read access to each dataset. That's a BIG deal, so kudos to the Power BI Engineering team for making that happen. Unfortunately this is currently only for Premium (PPU/PPC) workspaces, but as the article mentions, the same functionality will be brought to Pro workspaces before long.
Other official updates this week come in the form of Admin Monitoring of Power BI Usage in Excel (which adds additional information to the Power BI activity logs), news that the The Power BI app is coming to Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office (Preview), and an instruction to See what's new for Power BI at the Microsoft Business Applications Launch Event which is taking place tomorrow (April 6th) at 9:00 AM–10:30 AM PT (UTC-7). Don't miss it!
Finally, I wanted to call out the brilliant new and improved version of the Power BI end-to-end diagram created by Melissa Coates. For those that haven't seen previous versions of this, it's a great resource to help (visually) piece together the gigantic puzzle that is everything to do with Power BI. Go and check it out.
